When this is the right fix
When the pipe is coated rather than plugged — grease, scale and sludge on the wall, not a single obstruction.
Cable and jet do different jobs
This is the most useful distinction in drain cleaning and the one most often glossed over.
A cable — a rotating steel snake — is a mechanical tool. It bores through an obstruction and cuts what it catches. Against tree roots it is excellent: it cuts them out. Against an object stuck in the line it is the right tool, because it can hook it and pull it back.
Hydro jetting is a cleaning tool. Water at high pressure is delivered through a hose with a nozzle that directs most of the flow backwards, so the hose drives itself up the line while the jets scour the pipe wall behind it. The debris washes back down toward the cleanout.
The practical difference shows up on a coated pipe. Run a cable through a four-inch line lined with an inch of grease and you get a clear channel through the middle of the grease. Water flows, the customer is happy, and the inch of grease is still there — so it closes again. Jet the same line and the grease comes off the wall, and you have a four-inch pipe again rather than a two-inch hole through a four-inch pipe.
That is the entire argument, and it is why a kitchen line that gets cabled every few months usually stops being a problem once it is jetted properly.
What jetting is right for
- Grease. Restaurant and commercial kitchen lines, and domestic kitchen branches in houses where a lot of cooking happens.
- Scale in cast iron. Old cast iron narrows from the inside. Jetting takes the build-up off the wall; a cable cannot.
- Sludge and sediment in lines that run slowly, particularly floor drains and long horizontal runs.
- Root fragments and debris after cabling, to wash out what the cutter left behind.
- Scheduled maintenance on commercial lines with a known cycle.
What jetting is not right for
Being straight about this matters more than selling the service.
- A collapsed or badly deteriorated pipe. Jetting will not repair it, and high-pressure water in a line that has already lost structural integrity is not a good idea. This is one of the reasons to look at a line with a camera before jetting an old one.
- Deformed Orangeburg. Same reason, more so.
- A solid object lodged in the line. A cable retrieves it. Water pushes it further in.
- A first-time domestic blockage with no history. Cabling is usually the appropriate and proportionate response.
Commercial kitchens
If you run a kitchen, the useful thing to understand is that your drain line does not block from an event. It closes gradually, as grease cools on the pipe wall and builds layer by layer, and the day it finally stops is not the day the problem started. That is why kitchen blockages happen at the worst possible time — the line reaches the limit under the heaviest load.
A line on a jetting schedule does not reach that limit. Picking the interval is a matter of how much volume and how much grease, and that is a conversation, not a formula.

Common questions
Is hydro jetting better than snaking?
Neither is better — they do different things. A cable cuts roots and retrieves objects. Jetting removes grease, scale and sludge from the pipe wall. Using a cable on a greased line clears a channel that closes again; using a jet on a solid object pushes it further in. The right choice depends on what is actually in the pipe.
Will high-pressure water damage my pipes?
In a sound pipe, no — it is a cleaning process, and the pressure is directed at the pipe wall to lift deposits off it. In a pipe that has already failed structurally, it is not appropriate, which is exactly why an old line with unknown history should be looked at with a camera first. We would rather survey it than guess.
How often should a restaurant kitchen line be jetted?
It depends on volume and on how much grease the kitchen produces, so there is no single answer worth quoting. The pattern to watch is the interval between problems — if a line is being cabled every few months, that interval is telling you what your jetting schedule should be.
Does jetting get rid of tree roots?
It will clear root debris and wash out what is loose, but cutting established roots out of a joint is a cable job. In practice, root work is often cabled first and then jetted to flush out the fragments.
Can jetting fix a broken pipe?
No. Jetting cleans pipe; it does not repair it. If a line is cracked, collapsed or deformed, cleaning it is at best temporary and at worst harmful. That is a repair, and it should follow a camera survey rather than precede one.
