Saddle Brook borders Lodi to the north. It is about a mile and a half from our shop on Kennedy Drive to the middle of the township — close enough that Saddle Brook work fits into a day without rearranging it.
Post-war housing, post-war pipe
Saddle Brook grew substantially in the 1950s and 1960s, later than Lodi or Garfield, and the housing reflects that. There is proportionally more single-family ranch and split-level here and fewer of the pre-war two-families that dominate the boroughs to the south.
Practically, that shifts the common failures:
- More cast iron and early plastic, less clay, which means somewhat less root intrusion than in the older boroughs
- Long horizontal runs under slab in ranch houses, where a blockage is further from any cleanout than it looks
- Kitchen line grease as the leading cause of a single-fixture backup, rather than a main line problem
Split-levels deserve a specific mention. The drainage in a split-level changes elevation partway through the house, and a section running nearly flat between levels is where solids settle. If the same branch blocks repeatedly in a split-level, the pitch of that section is usually the reason, and a camera will show it.
Route 80, Route 46 and the commercial strip
Saddle Brook carries the interchange of Route 80 and the Garden State Parkway, and Route 46 runs through it. That corridor is full of restaurants, diners and commercial kitchens, and commercial kitchen drainage is a grease problem rather than a clog problem. Cabling a grease line opens a channel that closes again; jetting scours the wall. Kitchens on a jetting schedule stop having Saturday-night emergencies, which is the entire argument for it.
The Saddle River
The river the township is named after runs through it. Low-lying properties near it see the same groundwater pattern as western Lodi: basement floor drains that back up when the ground is saturated. Same advice — have the main line looked at, not just the floor drain.
